EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
